Sept. 28, 2008

We’re all in this “wilderness” together! Over the next few weeks, there will be a visual display in the Sanctuary as part of the morning message. We encourage everyone to move forward and sit near the front of the Sanctuary where the display is located.

A particular kind of coffee, model of car, personal care product or service, restaurant meal, electronic or computer device, home furnishing, hobby accessory, clothing/shoe style or designer, professional sporting event — Is there any item from this list or another man-made object in your life that means a whole lot to you? Maybe more than it should? We’re not talking about living things, such as family, friends, pets and other loved ones. This would be some “thing” that you have come to enjoy or value so much that it has a place of high priority in your life. If you thought of something, please bring it to church by Friday, October 10 so that we can incorporate it into a display for Sunday, the 12th. Many items may need to be represented by a photograph or other symbolic display such as a bag or box (or coffee cup) with the company or brand logo. See Pastor Annie if you have questions.

Adult Discussion Group: Next Sunday, October 5, we continue part 2 of our book study. Ron Scott is leading this 4-week study of Bart D. Ehrman’s, God’s Problem: How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important Question — Why We Suffer. Books may be purchased at retail stores. The group meets in the Adult Conference Room from 9:00 to 10:20 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Everyone is welcome to attend even if you have not read the book.

Young Youth Cluster — This evening, September 28, 5-7 pm at Samuel United Church of Christ — Calling all kids grades 3-5! Don't miss the first Young Youth Cluster of the year. The theme is “Don’t Judge a Banana By Its Cover”. Please bring a banana. Dinner, fun, games, and the largest banana split ever await you. Invite a friend! The Young Youth Cluster is a joint program of Faith Des Peres, Samuel UCC, Pilgrim Congregational, First Congregational (Clayton), and First Presbyterian (St. Louis) churches. See Pastor Annie today if you would like to come!

Middle & High School Youth Cluster meets again on Saturday, October 18 for a mission service project. We’ll gather at 10:00 a.m. at First Congregational UCC in Clayton to make sandwiches for Karen House, a shelter and hospitality center in St. Louis City for women and children who are homeless. We’ll deliver the sandwiches and possibly do an additional small on-site service project at Karen House.
