About Presbyterianism

Presbyterians are Christians who seek to follow Jesus Christ by loving God, serving others, and growing in faith together. At the heart of Presbyterianism is the belief that God's grace is a gift freely given to all people and that faith is a lifelong journey of learning, questioning, and discovery.

The Presbyterian tradition values both faith and thoughtful inquiry. Presbyterians believe that it's okay to ask questions, wrestle with difficult topics, and engage in meaningful conversations about what it means to live faithfully in today's world. Scripture is central to our faith, and we seek to understand it through study, prayer, and reflection.

Presbyterian churches are led by elected elders—ordinary members of the congregation who share in the responsibility of guiding the church. This reflects a belief that God works through the wisdom and gifts of the entire community.

Perhaps most importantly, Presbyterians strive to put their faith into action through worship, service, compassion, and a commitment to justice. While congregations may differ in style and personality, you'll often find Presbyterian churches to be welcoming communities where people can find hope, purpose, belonging, and opportunities to grow in their relationship with God.

What makes us different

All Christian churches share a belief in Jesus Christ, but different traditions emphasize different aspects of faith and church life. Presbyterians are known for combining deep faith with thoughtful reflection, encouraging people to engage both their hearts and minds as they grow spiritually.

One distinctive feature of Presbyterianism is its leadership structure. Rather than being led by a bishop or a single individual, Presbyterian churches are governed by elders—members of the congregation elected to serve and help guide the church. This shared leadership reflects a belief that God works through the wisdom and gifts of the whole community.

Presbyterians also place a strong emphasis on education, Bible study, and asking questions. Faith is seen as a journey, and people are encouraged to explore, learn, and wrestle with life's big questions without fear. You don't have to have everything figured out to belong.

Another hallmark of Presbyterian churches is a commitment to serving others. Presbyterians believe faith should be lived out through compassion, generosity, community engagement, and working for the well-being of others.

In many Presbyterian congregations, you'll find a balance of tradition and openness—worship that is rooted in centuries of Christian faith while remaining relevant to the world we live in today. For many people, that combination of thoughtful faith, meaningful worship, welcoming community, and service to others is what makes Presbyterianism feel like home.
