A Note from Annie

Dear Faith Des Peres Family,

Can you believe it's Labor Day weekend already? I can't! Where has the summer gone? Because it's Labor Day weekend, worship is at the Old Des Peres Church on Geyer Road. I'll be out of town visiting colleges with Tommy, so Rev. Carol DeVaughan is preaching in my absence. If you haven't been to the old church in a while you're in for a surprise, because the columbarium expansion is in full swing. The new sidewalk and "patio" is complete and the masonry around the new columbarium is almost done. It's a huge improvement! When the hardscape is done, the new landscape will be planted. I hope you like how it looks as much as I do.

If you're in town, I hope you'll be in worship. If you're out of town, I hope you have a peaceful last weekend of summer. I look forward to seeing everyone when I'm back on the 10th.

Blessings,

Annie

Hurricane Harvey Relief through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. — Song of Solomon 8:7      Hurricane Harvey struck the Texas coast late Friday, bringing lashing rain and sustained winds of 130 miles per hour. Even as its force has waned, Harvey has brought historic flooding,  forcing rivers and streams from their banks, submerging homes, churches, businesses and roads, stranding thousands of people. Your gifts are urgently needed now to support the   communities devastated by this historic storm and those throughout the Gulf region who are still in the path of Harvey’s torrential rains. A NOTE FROM ANNIE

Dear Faith Des Peres Family,

This Sunday I’ll continue my sermon series on Moses. We’ll hear the story of the burning bush which was a definitive moment in Moses’ life. He was reluctant to do what God told him to do and came up with every excuse in the book as to why he wasn’t qualified to lead the Hebrew people out of Egypt. Have you ever been asked to take on a task you were reluctant to do? It’s a silly question, because who among hasn’t been asked to do something we were reluctant to do? The better question is, how did you respond to your reluctance? Moses could have ignored God and continued to herd sheep. But he didn’t; he worked through his reluctance and sense of inadequacy and followed God’s call. Moses’ story encourages us to reflect on those types of moments in our lives and to remember that in them, God is present. I hope you’ll join us Sunday.

On another note, I’m pleased to let you know that we have hired a new Director of Music and Organist. Amy Mazzeo officially joins us September 1. You can read her bio below, but I’m very excited to welcome Amy and begin working with her. Please make a point of introducing yourself and welcoming her on September 10, her first with us.

See you Sunday!

Blessings,

Annie

Presbyterian Women Begins August 30, 9:30am

Welcome to the 2017– 2018 Presbyterian Women Bible study “Cloud of Witnesses: The Community of Christ in Hebrews”. In nine monthly lessons, we’ll explore major themes found in Hebrews, relate these themes to other parts of our faith tradition, and tie them together with the overarching motif of community. The community for which the letter was written interacts, in a sense, with all communities of which we are a part, as we bring these groups with us wherever we go. This ever-present “great cloud of witnesses”(Heb. 12:1) strengthens and encourages us as we “run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith”  Study books will be available in the Gathering Space. Join us!

Moses sermon series continues this Sunday!

Moses is the single most important figure in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament), and his life serves as the backdrop for much of the New Testament. Throughout history, his story has continued to speak to each generation. Today, it speaks to us again and reveals truth about us as human beings. In this series, we’ll learn about Moses and how his story intersects with ours through the sermon and personal testimonies. Today, we’ll hear from church member Mary Lewis, who will weave together a personal story from a time in her life when she encountered her “burning bush” moment; i.e. a time when she was called   upon to do something but didn’t feel up to the task.

A Note from Annie

Dear Faith Des Peres Community,

This Sunday I’m beginning a new sermon series about Moses. Yes, that’s right, personal testimonies. In a Presbyterian Church!

This Sunday we’ll hear from Tommy Epling and Jordan Harris, recent graduates of the Cultural Leadership Institute. They’ve been on a year-long transformational journey that has trained them to be change agents, social justice activists, and troublemakers of the best kind by recognizing and resolving issues of privilege and injustice through the lens of the African American and Jewish experience. Like Moses, they have been called to work for freedom for all.

Their testimonies couldn’t be more timely given the demonstrations of racial and religious hatred expressed by white nationalist, Neo-Nazi, and Ku Klux Klan groups in Charlottesville.  Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, the Stated Clerk of the PC(USA), wrote on August 14 in his statement about Charlottesville: “White supremacy will not be eradicated until faith leaders become willing to risk their very lives (professional and otherwise) for the sake of the gospel.” On Sunday, in my sermon, we’ll hear the story of two women who risked their lives to save Moses’ life because they feared God more than they feared Pharaoh. It’s a powerful story that compels us to ask ourselves: do we fear God enough to do the same, to risk our lives for the sake of the Gospel?

Friends, racism is real and so is our part in it, whether we want to hear that or not. But if we can’t acknowledge our sin in church and in front of each other, where else can we? I know the topic can be uncomfortable, it often is for me, but we must bear witness to the gospel message that “White supremacy and racism stand in stark, irreconcilable contradiction to God’s intention for humanity. This requires courage and a deep faith to speak truth in love.”

I hope you’ll join us Sunday as we try to do just that.

Blessings,

Annie

In addition to the testimonies, today’s liturgical art reflects the Nile River, where Moses was found as a baby among the bulrushes. Also in today’s service is the Belhar Confession, adopted by the PC(USA) in 2016, that was born out of the apartheid movement in South Africa.

Circle of Concern

It’s a communion Sunday which means the kids will pull the wagon and collect food for Circle of Concern during the offering time. The idea behind Feeding the Flock is that while we are spiritually fed at Christ’s table, we are called to physically feed others. This is an important outreach ministry of Faith Des Peres, and is one that gets everyone involved. Even if you forgot food today, you can always donate food to Circle of Concern by dropping it off at the church. Thank you.

Buddy Packs is Expanding! Packers needed!

This fall, we’re expanding our Buddy Packs program in a big way. We’re partnering with the University City School District to provide buddy packs to 60 students in that district each week! We’re also partnering with Twigs, an non-profit organization in Granite City that provides buddy packs to students in several Illinois school districts, to get our food for pennies on the dollar. NEW THIS YEAR: we will pack all of the packs (240+) for the month on one Sunday each month. We’ll need at least 10 volunteers to help pack each month. Our first packing session will be today. We’ll meet in Fellowship Hall at 11:45 a.m. to get started. Beginning in September, we will pack after church on the second Sunday of the month. Sign up to help pack on SignUpGenius: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0D4AABA82BA1F49-buddy. We’ll also need volunteers to help deliver the buddy packs to four schools in University City each week. If you would like to deliver on a regular basis, or would like to be a back-up to our regular delivery team, please reach out to Roy Lenox or Gina Bright.

A Note from Annie

Dear Faith Des Peres Family,

Sunday is our 3rd annual Church in the Park worship service and BBQ lunch at 10:30 at Kirkwood Park/Lions Pavilion! This has become one of my favorite Sundays at Faith Des Peres. The atmosphere is fun, and the access to parking and a playground is easy for all ages. I hope you can come! The church will provide the hamburgers and hotdogs and drinks, we just need you to bring a side dish/salad or dessert to share.  If you’re returning to school, bring your backpack, too, for the annual Blessing of the Backpacks. I hope you can be there!  DON'T FORGET TO WEAR YOUR FDP T-SHIRT!

Things are kicking into gear here at the church with Disciples Gathering (Sunday School) starting on August 20. Sydney and Clare are teaching again this year a middle school class and elementary class, respectively. Both classes will learn about Moses, whom the adults will be learning about in church, too. Everyone should have something to talk about on their way home from church!

Make sure to read about Buddy Packs later in this email and the awesome changes that are happening with this program. There’s a Sign-up Genius link to help pack. This is an easy way to make a big impact in the lives of others, it won’t take long, and all ages can help.

I hope to see you Sunday!

Annie

Disciples Gathering August 20, 2017

Moses is one of the heroes of the faith. Rescued as a child, raised in a royal family, exiled to the wilderness, called from a burning bush, sent to save his people, entrusted by God with the Ten Commandments, Moses was a man whose life overflowed with drama and God's blessings. His story is one everyone should know. While the kids and youth learn it in Disciples Gathering, adults will be learning about Moses in worship
